Default Best expansion for a new player? Already have Nightfall

I currently have Nightfall, but am finding it a bit of a hard learning curve. I have heard that Prohpecies is the best expansion to start of with, and I thought this was probably true as it was the first one.
What are your opinions on this? I am thinking of buying another expansion later today, and if Prophecies would be a good choice for me, I will do it.

Thank you!

This is a bit of a tricky question.

Many will say getting Prophecies is preferable since you'll learn the game and lore "as it should be learnt" but personally (being a fairly new player myself) Prophecies is the campaign I've spent the least time in. Of the four campaigns I've spent most of my time in NF and Factions, followed by EotN and last Prophecies.

If you're planning on playing Guildwars 2 then getting Eye of the North is your best option as you need to have that to be able to fill your HoM. So, if I had only NF and could only buy one more campaign, it would be EotN.

If it's an option, get all of the campaigns. I couldn't do without any of them now to be honest.

Instead of getting another campaign (not that that's not a good idea, of course, but for a different reason), try finding a teacher, someone that'll teach you the actual basics of play (not just give you the best PvX builds, but teach you why a 5 energy 5 rechard spell doesn't require energy management, why a 7 second condition won't satisfy the requirements of the third spell in the series of three 2 second casting time spells and similar).

Thanks for your replies.
@Ishmel, I can get all the expansions. I just wanted to know what would be a good one to get now. Ive read a lot of different opinions on this matter, most have said Prophecies.
I will get EotN but, not yet. That'll probably be the last one I get, after (if) I manage to properly play this game, and learn it.

@Iuris, I will get another campaign, but this teacher thing sounds interesting. By teacher, I assume you mean a player? I've noticed that most players don't talk much. I have not spoken to anyone in a town so far Noone seems particuarly sociable.

In my opinion Nightfall is the best, that's what I started with and don't regret it. I personally would have hated starting with Prophecies(I played the starting area after I finished nightfall on a new char to understand the storyline better). Matter of taste, but Nightfall felt a lot more polished/modern, plus you get heroes. I also liked the story a lot more, but that's very subjective.

Expansions are the same price as the trilogy pack though, you might as well buy it(even though you already have nightfall) so you have access to all 3 campaigns.

The wiki is obviously a good place to look for information, but Prophecies really won't help you much more than Nightfall in my opinion. The "tutorial" part of the game is short in both, and is mostly done through NPCs via walls of text, so yeah.

Prophecies is a lot easier on new players; even more so since you get to use any heroes you gained from Nightfall.
Factions is also fine but has a pretty steep curve until you reach level 20 (which happens pretty quickly).

Prophecies also has some of the more 'core' profession skills that aren't core skills.

Hmm, good point. Teaching someone is time counsuming, and not everyone still remembers what you need to start with...

I could write you up some basics, but time's a limiting factor these days.

Please tell me what character you made (profession, secondary profession) and how far you've got so far.

P.S. it's not that people are not sociable. It's just that the game is, frankly, old. Most people who play have been playing for a long time and have done everything tenj times (litterally, in my own case...) and now work to some long term goals or the most profitable activities. Happily, the game is furnished with AIs who, properly used, are perfectly adequate for the job.

Hi There,

I will just adda few things as basic stuff really but first things first.

Play a char that you enjoy as its fun and what you put into it

Look at our campfire section using the link below on what class

http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/campfire-f17.html

Asyou are finding it somewhat difficult you have to think a little as you progress ..as far as synergy for your char and also the synergy with the heros thats in your party, no use just throwing something on and hope for the best.

Obtaining skills for your char and heros..yes some may a bit a ways off in the game but you can obtain ones for your heros by doing a few things for e.g

If its just pve you play make a PVP char and use balth faction to get skills for your heros if its a certain build you require for it.
Then once done you can delete the PVP char if you so wish.

The main thing to be honest is..do not try to rush through a game you learn nothing by doing that, mostly its guys who have played a lot more and want there char to a specific area.

If you are at a certain mission just press F10 scrol down the list till you see it . then it will not only give you an insight to the mission but what foes you will encounter hence you may have to adjust your build along with a few heros

Hope this helps you a little, this game is all about fun and learning as you go along

Hey there, Poppy!

I'd be happy to help you learn the ropes in Guild Wars... without rushing, pushing, doing it for you, etc., of course. I remember my salad days in the game and it certainly can be a bit overwhelming to learn everything at once.

I'll send you a private message with my in-game name. I'll be around this evening (Central Time Zone), so look me up!

If you like GW and intend to keep playing it, I would suggest that the cheapest route is to buy the Trilogy+EotN or the Complete Collection - it depends on your location. It's true that you would essentially "waste" the Nightfall part because you already have it, but it works out to be cheaper than buying them separately.

Also, if you like to play GW for GW's sake, don't get too involved in the whole "fill your HoM" business. It's really not worth spending all your time doing that for a few common trinkets in GW2 - which will surely be out-shined by new GW2 stuff anyway.

If I only had nightfall and could get one other gw game I would go for eye of the north.

Prophecies. It has the slowest learning curve and actually feels like a game. Factions is great too but you level way too damn fast.

Thank you for all your replies, everyone! I have gone with Prophecies for now. Most people said it had the slowest curve, and from what I've played so far (All 30 minutes of it...!) It does seem slower than Nightfall. Which is good.

Although I do have another question (if anyone is still reading this thread that is!). I have made a Ranger in the Prophecies expansion. When I get to higher levels, will I be able to do quests in the Nightfall areas, as I also have that expansion? Or do I need to make a character in the Nightfall campaign bit?
Sorry if that sounds like jibberish, haha.

Thanks

Yes. You can experience almost everything, except for the earliest tutorial areas with a "foreign" character (maybe 20% of the stuff in the campaign).

Eventually, that is. You'll need to unlock continental travel first, in the case of Prophecies by reaching Lion's Arch.

I know what you mean. I've been playing through Prophecies with my newest character and always tried to find some people to join me for missions. The only reply I ever got was something along the lines of "I don't have time to play with noobs". Which amused me.

Once you get to Lion's Arch, you can get a small quest from Lionguard Figo which will unlock travel to Nightfall.
Also, your Nightfall character can get a quest in Kamadan that will unlock travel to Prophecies.
More info: http://www.guildwiki.org/Campaign_Travel

Once unlocked, you can use the Boat that appears on the map, in the ocean, to map-travel freely between campaigns.

Nightfall has spoilers to the Prophecies campaign, and even a little bit of Factions content is tied to it. It comes last, chronologically (of the 3 campaigns), so if you care about storyline at all, I suggest you finish the other campaigns first. It's all fairly cheap on Steam
